Tuesday 11 June 2024 at 7.30pm ONE LIFE (12A) - A Charity Film Show WITH A GUEST SPEAKER Haddenham Screen is joining forces with Haddenham & District Rotary to raise funds for local childrens' causes, by screening the celebrated movie One Life. It tells the story of the KinderTransport project of pre-war 1938, and its leader (Sir) Nicholas Winton, which saved the lives of 669 children from the Nazis and the forthcoming WWII. Starring Anthony Hopkins, Johnny Flynn and Helena Bonham Carter, the movie recalls the dramatic rescue of the children from Czechoslovakia, to be brought by train live with British foster families, avoiding the terrible fate to be imposed on their parents and relatives. Years later, the story was to be brought to public attention by two emotional episodes of the 1988 BBC television programme That's Life.
110 mins Director: James Hawes Starring: Anthony Hopkins, Johnny Flynn, Helena Bonham Carter, Awards: Most Valuable Film in Cinema for Peace awards Reviews: "The story is so inherently powerful and moving and there is so much goodness and decency at work it will set you off. Take a whole box of tissues if you want to play it safe and would rather not deploy your sleeve." SPECTATOR "The film does justice to this overwhelmingly moving event in British public life in a quietly affecting drama." **** GUARDIAN "James Hawes directs with warmth and unfussiness, and is careful to show the wound-opening pain, as well as the pride, that the belated recognition of Winton’s achievements gave him." **** TIMES |
