ANATOMY OF A FALL (15)

152 mins

Director:  Justine Triet

Starring:  Sandra Hüller, Swann Arlaud, Milo Machado Graner

Synopsis:

Grenoble, France. With eloquent lawyers nitpicking and hypothesising for hours in a nearly silent courtroom, unapologetically successful novelist Sandra Voyter stands accused of killing Samuel Maleski, her husband.

As the impartial judge, the inscrutable jury, and the ruthless public prosecutor sift through the evidence, plausible theories invite new possibilities that accommodate even more interpretations of the steep, fatal fall. But Sandra's grieving son, the  partially-sighted Daniel, has the right to know. What led to Samuel's untimely demise? Was it a frigid emotional void or undeserved misfortune that decided his fate? Or was it a malicious human hand that claimed Dad's life?

Awards:  One Oscar award and four nominations, one BAFTA award and four nominations, Palme d'Or at Cannes Film Festival

Reviews:

"It’s hard not to be drawn in. Sandra is a fascinating, one-woman puzzle box, thanks largely to the strength of Hüller’s performance."  ****  INDEPENDENT

"Ultimately, one of the key pleasures of the picture is its uncertainty – the niggling doubts that remain, and the sense that a crucial piece of the puzzle is tantalisingly out of reach."  ****  OBSERVER

"Anatomy of a Fall works brilliantly as a Hitchcockian thriller for today, but it has depths and resonances beyond the genre. We all construct our stories; they’re always partial; we never fully know each other."  NEW STATESMAN
