THE NAKED GUN (12A) 85 mins Director: Avika Schaffer Starring: Liam Neeson, Pamela Anderson, Paul Walter Hauser, Danny Huston Synopsis: A slapstick comedy parody of the Naked Gun movies of the 1990s, the film introduces us to Frank Drebin Jr., son of the legendary police lieutenant, who's trying to step out of his father's shadow while working as a serious, no-nonsense detective. The central problem he faces is living up to an impossible legacy while dealing with a police force that expects him to be as bumbling as his father. When a mysterious criminal mastermind begins targeting city officials with increasingly absurd assassination attempts, Drebin Jr. stop the plot before the mayor becomes the next victim. The twist? The criminal's methods are so ridiculous that only someone who thinks in equally absurd ways can solve the case. The initial conflict revolves around Drebin Jr.'s struggle to embrace his inherited talent for chaotic problem-solving while maintaining his professional dignity. His straight-laced approach consistently backfires, forcing him to gradually accept that sometimes, the dumbest solution might be the right one. Awards: Reviews: "The Naked Gun is a prime example of filmmakers taking a nostalgic piece of cinema and making good on its legacy. It honours the humour above all, and you’d be hard-pushed to find a funnier film this year." ***** TIME OUT "See it with an audience, and experience the rare and wonderful pleasure of a crowd scrambling to keep up with one of the stupidest films it’s ever seen." **** DAILY TELEGRAPH "It’s not exactly revolutionary stuff, but it does remind us, despite what some might claim, that comedy can still take risks while maintaining basic social awareness." **** INDEPENDENT "It’s a very, very funny film; so cheerful and light on its feet that it all but erases the outside world for 85 sparkling minutes, replacing it with a better one."
