THE LAST SHOWGIRL (15)

88 mins

Director:  Gia Coppolla

Starring:  Pamela Anderson, Brenda Song

Synopsis:

After 38 years of sparkling rhinestones, glorious ostrich feathers and exciting eye-high kicks, Le Razzle Dazzle, the last exotic burlesque revue on the Las Vegas Strip, is set for the final curtain. After all, times have changed; no one knows what Parisian Lido culture means. For most of the girls, the show's abrupt end marks a new beginning. Veteran headliner Shelly is a different story. Now, with dreaded uncertainty looming over her future, the ageing but undeniably charming performer must figure out what to do next to pay the rent. As the paradox of choice and urgency of change smear the dazzling facade of the iconic American Showgirl, vulnerable Shelly has one last chance to mend her tattered relationships or ruin them forever. But in a cold world quick to write her off, what opportunities remain for her?

Awards:  One BAFTA nomination

Reviews:

"It’s initially tempting to dismiss the picture, like its central character with her breathy, little-girl voice, as superficial. But there’s a bruising cumulative power to this melancholy little paean to an ending era."  ****  OBSERVER

"Warm and generous performances carry this good-natured movie from director Gia Coppola; it’s actually the sort of approachable, actor-led drama for grownups that pundits complain Hollywood doesn’t produce any more."  ***  GUARDIAN

"In Gia Coppola’s sensitive telling, the glitter swiftly disperses to reveal an elegiac meditation on memory and age, femininity and beauty."  ****  TIMEOUT
